At Exploration Station Children’s Museum in Bourbonnais, Illinois, the beloved but aging medieval castle area was ready for a new chapter. The team at Bourbonnais Township Park District had a vision for something fresh—something that would spark imagination and invite little ones into a world of wonder. That spark turned into a full-blown storybook forest adventure.
The new themed space was inspired by the familiar tales of Mother Goose, Peter Rabbit, Robin Hood, Peter Pan, and Alice in Wonderland, and it brings them all to life in playful, unexpected ways. Hand-drawn-style murals create a rich, illustrated atmosphere where every corner feels like a page from a classic book. Flowing stream graphics guide kids from one experience to the next. Sculpted tea party elements add just the right touch of whimsy, and a puppet stage encourages kids to jump into their own storytelling fun.
And then there’s the tree—not just any tree, but a towering centerpiece that’s full of surprises; a perfect hideaway for Peter Pan's lost boys. This sculpted giant, designed with accessibility in mind, is packed with playful possibilities: two large slides, interactive activities, hidden nooks, stairs, and platforms all tucked inside. It’s part playground, part adventure hub, and all imagination.
When the project first began, the museum team came in with a set budget and a strong sense of direction. But after touring the nearby Treetop Escape experience created for the West Chicago Parks District, everything changed. Seeing the possibilities in person gave them new ideas—and the confidence to dream even bigger. They did some research, found a grant opportunity, and ultimately secured funding to double their original budget! That extra support allowed for the inclusion of additional sculpted elements and a more immersive design overall.
Now, the updated space is more than just a remodel. It’s a full reimagining—one that encourages creativity, hands-on play, and story-driven exploration. It’s a place where fairy tales grow on trees, streams lead to dreams, and every visit feels like a brand-new adventure.
