Some places are built to entertain. Others are built to heal, include, and inspire. At Special Care, Inc., a nonprofit serving children of all abilities in Oklahoma, a once-beloved playroom was reimagined into something even more magical: a fully immersive indoor adventure designed with accessibility, joy, and nature at its heart.
The design team took inspiration from the movie, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, crafting an environment where children feel like they’ve stepped into the tall grass of the Oklahoma prairie. A towering custom tree play structure serves as the centerpiece, with interactive game panels positioned at wheelchair height, so no child is left out of the fun.
Nearby, a wheelchair-accessible rowboat offers space for exploration and pretend play, while other custom elements—like a log climber—invite creative movement for children of all abilities.
The space is wrapped in breathtaking murals featuring native Oklahoma wildflowers and butterflies, each one digitally hand-painted for this project. These custom illustrations were carefully selected and composed to reflect the surrounding landscape, turning the circular room into a fully immersive prairie world.
Far from generic wall art, these murals serve as a visual embrace—something familiar and calming for children who may not always feel understood by the spaces around them.
The materials used throughout this space, as well as in all of Wacky World Studios' projects, were selected for both durability and ease of daily cleaning, ensuring the environment can withstand constant play while still feeling fresh and welcoming.
Even a year after installation, the wall coverings and features remain vibrant, clean, and intact—a testament to thoughtful planning and construction.
This space does more than entertain. It invites. It welcomes children who use wheelchairs to play on equal ground. It gives kids with sensory sensitivities a soft, nature-inspired world to explore. It helps families feel like their child is seen, supported, and part of something bigger.
And for many children at Special Care, this may be one of the few immersive environments they’ll ever experience—making it not just a playground, but a powerful memory in the making.
